Depression and Anxiety

How Therapy Works

Picture
Do you have little interest or pleasure in doing things?  Do you find it hard to find meaning in your life?  Do you feel down, depressed or hopeless much of the time?  Do you feel bad about yourself – that you are a failure? Maybe you feel disconnected and alone. Perhaps you have experienced a loss and feel stuck down in the dumps. Or you are not emotionally here most of the time.

I can help!
First, you need to find a place where you feel safe to share your innermost thoughts, feelings, and intuition.  I provide a non-threatening, accepting environment which can empower your nervous system and help you increase your energy.  Your body can do this and knows how, with the proper tools, support, and guidance.  I present a broad palette of techniques and actions – some of which will be just what you need to wake things up.  My approach is gentle, energizing, or more structured, depending on your needs.  Your body posture, awareness, and issues tell me a lot about how to best guide you in healing.

Next, we identify the source or sources of your depression or loss of motivation.  Some people are going through a life transition, such as retirement, the death of a loved one, or career change which seems overwhelming.  Sometimes you feel like giving up.  Others have had a life-threatening event (a flood, car accident, illness) which shakes their world.  They don’t feel safe anymore. Maybe both are happening at once!

For most people with depression, suppressed anger or sadness, boundary-setting, empowerment, and coping skills help you heal yourself – the ultimate goal.

Trauma Relief

For those who have experienced trauma, I use two methods to help you release the stuckness and depression which the body holds: you can be more resilient.  I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization – see EMDR counseling for more information) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SPI) – see Pat Ogden’s website for my listing and description of how it works.

In my experience, people who are depressed have a lot of potential energy.  There may be defenses that keep you from meeting your needs.  They kept you alive when you were growing up, but you need additional skills and experiences to heal wounds from the past.  You CAN REACH your full potential and meet current challenges.  Learning to accept all your feelings and be present can help you find JOY in LIVING.
